What is a Troy Ounce

Most of the precious metals, such as gold, silver, and platinum and so on are measure in the system of weights known as the troy system of weights. For those who wish to know what is a troy ounce, all major precious metal bullion coins, in the form of US Silver Eagle, or the American Gold Eagles are weighed in troy ounces.

Troy Ounce and the Common Ounce

A troy ounce is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce commonly used to measure food items in a grocery store. However, when comparing the troy pound with the avoirdupois pound or the ordinary pound, it is seen that the troy pound is lesser in weight than the ordinary pound. This is because the troy pound contains only 12 troy ounces, whereas the avoirdupois pound contains 16 avoirdupois ounces in it. Of course, you might argue that the troy ounce is heavier than the avoirdupois pound and this should make a difference but the disparity in weight is not enough to make the troy pound heavier than the ordinary pound.

Troy Ounce and Grams

Perhaps the best method of understanding what is troy ounce would be to compare the troy ounce and ounce in terms of another measure of weight, namely, grams. One troy ounce weighs 31.1 grams whereas one avoirdupois ounce weighs only 28.35 grams. In case you wish to convert avoirdupois ounce or the common ounce into troy ounce, you need to multiply the avoirdupois ounce value with .912 in order to get the rough value in troy ounces. This can be better understand by knowing what is troy ounce, which means that ten troy ounces can be equaled in their weight by almost 11(10.96) common ounces.

Troy Pound and Avoirdupois pound

If you wish to compare troy pounds with avoirdupois pounds and know what is a troy ounce, then the best way would be to find their equivalent in another measure, namely, grams. Since a troy pound contains 12 troy ounces, and one troy ounce has 31.1 grams in it, a troy pound contains or weighs 373 grams approximately. However, an avoirdupois pound has 16 avoirdupois ounces in it and one such ounce weighs 28.35 grams. Hence, one avoirdupois pound is the equivalent of 453 grams. This gives us another result that the avoirdupois pound is heavier than the troy pound, as it contains more number of grams in it. (Compare 453 grams with 373 grams).

Hence, while knowing what is a troy ounce, though the troy ounce is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce, the troy pound is lighter than the avoirdupois pound. This is because the troy pound contains only 12 ounces in it whereas the avoirdupois pound contains 16 ounces in it.
